As our family, home, and lifestyles evolve, it should come as no surprise that our plumbing needs evolve. Any momentous changes in lifestyle can mean our plumbing has to change to fit the task. Rather than struggling with the inconvenience, calling a respected and knowledgeable plumber to upgrade our plumbing can make life so much easier.
Growing family
For parents of young children, every encounter with an ice cream cone or pile of sand represents another need for a bath. One young mother told us, "When Andrew was little, it was easy to pop him in the kitchen sink for a quick wash, but now that he's two, he's too big. We needed a bathtub!" She was willing to forgo her linen closet and a closet in another room for the expansion required to add a tub rather than move to another home because they like the school district.
Health changes
As seniors choose to stay longer in their forever homes, they're adding walk-in showers and hand-held sprayers to help them with bathing activities. Smart faucets have a digital display which shows the temperature of the water, so there is no reason for people with sensitive skin to chill or scald themselves anymore. The display indicates when the temperature is right. Some have an indicator light which changes from blue (cold) to red (hot) as the water changes temperature. Purple is in between the two colors, representing water which is neither too hot nor too cold. There is even a combo unit, which both senses and adjusts the temperature of the flow.
New technology
New technology is also helping those with other health challenges, such as a late-deafened woman who couldn't hear running water anymore. Occasionally, she'd turn on the faucet and leave the water running, only to come back hours later to find it still on. After she had a Smart faucet installed, it would turn off automatically after a few minutes, preventing a potential flood and gallons of wasted water.
Those who are concerned about their carbon footprint can install a tankless water heater or a hot water recirculation pump to conserve energy and limit water consumption.
Age of the plumbing
As plumbing ages, older fixtures, pipes, and connections can fail. As a result, the plumbing needs to be monitored and replaced when necessary. Some homeowners bite the bullet and replace all of their plumbing at once. Others wait as long as possible. Each home is different, but a good sign your turn for pipe replacement is coming is if the neighbors in the same area with the same kind of water and home build all seem to be replacing their pipes.
While these examples are by no means inclusive, they offer examples of how plumbing needs don't remain constant, and how changes can bring about comfort, safety, and better hygiene for a family's changing needs.
