The garbage disposal is a helpful kitchen appliance concealed under the sink that performs the essential function of cleaning away the unwanted food scraps. Not many homeowners are aware that the garbage disposal needs to be cleaned from time to time to ensure it performs efficiently.

Though they usually clean themselves, food particles and residues left behind can lead to unpleasant odors and straining noise due to its continuous use over time. Cleaning a garbage disposal does not necessarily require the help of a professional plumber. Anyone can easily do it using materials available in the home.

Before beginning the cleaning, it is essential to ensure that the unit is not plugged in or the source supplying power to it is turned off.

Here are a few DIY garbage disposal cleaning tips:

Cleaning the visible parts

It is quite simple to clean the visible portions of the garbage disposal, especially the joint where the rim and the sink basin meet. This area can see mold growth, and food particles and other debris get trapped there. Use a scrub brush or toothbrush and dishwashing soap to clean and get rid of the slime.

Use ice cubes

Pour two cups of ice cubes into the garbage disposal, followed by a cup of salt, and turn it on. Keep the cold water running as the cubes grind. Salt and ice will work as a scrub to clean the blades and get rid of any build-up.

Baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar work effectively to clean the garbage disposal. Pour half a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar, and let it rest for about 5-10 minutes to kill bacteria and act as a natural deodorizer. Run the garbage disposal and flush hot water into it.

Citrus peel

Citrus peels like lemon, orange, lime, and grapefruit work as a deodorizer and help get rid of foul smells. Cut them into small pieces and stuff them into the disposal. Run cold water and turn the unit on to let the peels grind.

Dish wash and hot water

Block the drain with the help of a stopper and pour dish soap or detergent in the sink. After that, run hot water and release the stopper and turn on the unit to allow the soapy water to clean the appliance and the disposal drain line.

Tips to keep the garbage disposal clean

  • Do not put harsh drain cleaners in the unit.

  • Avoid putting your hands into the garbage disposal.

  • Keep the cold water running for 15-30 seconds after everything is ground up.

  • Avoid putting hard food substances and grease or oil into the unit.

  • Break large food particles into small pieces before they go into the disposal.

Contact a professional plumber if the above methods don’t work and the garbage disposal still smells foul or if you are looking for deep cleaning of the unit. Be cautious while using this appliance and ensure to keep it germ and odor-free.
